The Horologicon : A Day's Jaunt Through the Lost Words of the English Language

Description

Do you wake up feeling rough? Then you're philogrobolized. Find yourself pretending to work? That's fudgelling. And this could lead to rizzling, if you feel sleepy after lunch. Though you are sure to become a sparkling deipnosopbist by dinner. Just don't get too vinomadefied; a drunk dinner companion is never appreciated. The Horologicon (or book of hours) contains the most extraordinary words in the English language, arranged according to what hour of the day you might need them. From Mark Forsyth, the author of the #1 international bestseller, The Etymologicon, comes a book of weird words for familiar situations. From ante-jentacular to snudge by way of quafftide and wamblecropt, at last you can say, with utter accuracy, exactly what you mean.

But when an unexpected tragedy strikes the tight-knit Walker community, Shea s comfortable world is upended, and she begins to wonder if the life she s chosen is really enough for her. As she finally gives up her safety net to set out on an unexpected path, Shea discovers unsettling truths about the people and things she has always trusted most and is forced to confront her deepest desires, fears, and secrets. But then an unexpected visitor from Grier s past unsettles the entire town just when the residents were finally starting to warm to her. By the time Mick comes out of the clouds to realize he s fallen head over heels in love, it might be just too late to win Grier s heart." Step into Jean Haines' distinctive, exciting world of watercolour with this, the ultimate guide to her influences, style and work. Jean's loose, expressive paintings are filled with colour and personality, embracing a range of subjects that includes flowers, animals, people and places, all influenced by the countries and cities she's lived in and the people she's met during her life. This beautiful book contains easy-to-follow and inspiring introductory sections such as 'an artist's treasure chest' and 'the colour gym', offering practical guidance and in-depth exercises in an innovative and accessible way, and the numerous En Shadud : Salvage Excavations at a Farming Community in the Jezreel Valley, Israel free download pdf examples of Jean's work will inspire and encourage novice as well as experienced artists. After this introductory section, the book shows the reader how to put the skills they've learned into practice with gorgeous step-by-step projects packed full of expert tips and advice, encouraging them to move forward and develop their own style of working. Like her painting, Jean's writing is filled with passion and enthusiasm, transporting the reader through a world of watercolour that will not fail to excite and inspire.

No Woman Tenderfoot : Florence Merriam Bailey, Pioneer Naturalist

Description

Years before pesticides and other pollutants began to endanger species, humans had no trouble finding less sophisticated ways of endangering wildlife. When the twentieth century had barely begun, the passenger pigeons had been slain to the last and the American bison had been hunted to the brink of extinction. Love of and concern for nature called people like Florence Merriam Bailey to action. Bailey was one of the first to study live birds in their natural environment instead of studying specimens that had been shot and brought into a laboratory. She was the first woman to be an associate member of the American Ornithologists' Union, and for fifty years, with her husband Vernon Bailey, chief naturalist for the U.S. Biological Survey, she spent summers in the West and Southwest observing birds and making field notes, often from the back of a horse or mule. Harriet Kofalk has chronicled Florence Merriam Bailey's life, with Florence's sixtyyear correspondence with her brother, Hart, as a major source. Numerous excerpts from her ten books and more than one hundred articles are included, all describing joyfully the pleasures of studying live birds.

The New Genetics and Dangers of GMOs MAE-WAN HO The Vampire Bund, No Woman Tenderfoot : Florence Merriam Bailey, Pioneer Naturalist free ebook a peaceful island nation of vampires off the coast of Tokyo, ruled by Princess Mina Tepes, has seen its share of conflict and turmoil. Yet there are times of relative tranquility when the Bund is a popular tourist destination. After two teenage tourists visit the Bund, their lives will never be the same, as they are unexpectedly turned into vampires. With insight and humor, Dr. Jeffers shows you how to become powerful in the face of your fears and enjoy the elation of living a creative, joyous, loving life. MTH Collection #4: Books 25-28: "Stage Fright on a Summer Night, Good Morning, Gorillas, Thanksgiving on Thursday, High Tide in Hawaii - What single driving tip can save you $30,000 during your lifetime; Whenever I resolve to write less and do something healthful instead, like ice dancing - some honey-tongued editor is sure to call me up and make me an offer I can't refuse. So in some ways this book is simply the result of an under-developed ability to say no.' Collected and published in the UK for the first time, here are essays and journalism from the brilliant novelist and poet. Ranging from book reviews of John Updike and Toni Morrison to an appreciation of Dashiell Hammet; an account of a journey in Afghanistan that sowed the seeds of The Handmaid's Tale; passionate ecological writings; funny stories of 'my most embarrassing moments'; obituaries of some of her great friends and fellow writers: Angela Carter, Mordecai Richler, Carol Shields. This is an insightful, thoughtful and revealing record of the life and times and writings of Margaret Atwood from 1970 to the present.

How to Teach : A Practical Guide for Librarians

Description

Designed for any librarian who needs to teach either one person at a time or an entire class, How to Teach: A Practical Guide for Librarians is a standalone guide to becoming proficient in teaching users how to access, evaluate and use information. This book is designed for all librarians and library staff who teach as part of their role and is useful to library school students new to teaching.

In 1989, when the Cold War ended, there were six permanent international courts. Today there are more than two dozen that have collectively issued over thirty-seven thousand binding legal rulings. The New Terrain of International Law charts the developments and trends in the creation and role of international courts, and explains how the delegation of authority to international judicial institutions influences global and domestic politics. The New Terrain How to Teach : A Practical Guide for Librarians download book of International Law presents an in-depth look at the scope and powers of international courts operating around the world. Focusing on dispute resolution, enforcement, administrative review, and constitutional review, Karen Alter argues that international courts alter politics by providing legal, symbolic, and leverage resources that shift the political balance in favor of domestic and international actors who prefer policies more consistent with international law objectives. International courts name violations of the law and perhaps specify remedies.

Oystein Ore: Number Theory and Its History

Number Theory and Its History

Description

"A very valuable addition to any mathematical library." -- "School Science and Math "This book, written by a prominent mathematician and Sterling Professor of Mathematics at Yale, differs from most other books on number theory in two important ways: first, it presents the principal ideas and methods of number theory within a historical and cultural framework, making the subject more tangible and easily grasped. Second, the material requires substantially less mathematical background than many comparable texts. Technical complications and mathematical requirements have been kept to a minimum in order to make the book as accessible as possible to readers with limited mathematical knowledge. For the majority of the book, a basic knowledge of algebra will suffice. In developing the importance and meaning of number theory in the history of mathematics, Professor Ore documents the contributions of a host of history's greatest mathematicians: Diophantos, Euclid, Fibonacci, Euler, Fermat, Mersenne, Gauss, and many more, showing how these thinkers evolved the major outlines of number theory. Topics covered include counting and recording of numbers, the properties of numbers, prime numbers, the Aliquot parts, indeterminate problems, theory of linear indeterminate problems, Diophantine problems, congruences, analysis of congruences, Wilson's Theorem, Euler's Theorem, theory of decimal expansions, the converse of Fermat's Theorem, and the classical construction problems. Based on a course the author gave for a number of years at Yale, this book covers the essentials of number theory with a clarity and avoidance of abstruse mathematics that make it an ideal resource for undergraduates or for amateur mathematicians. It has even been recommended for self-study by gifted high school students. In short, "Number Theory and Its History" offers an unusually interesting and accessible presentation of one of the oldest and most fascinating provinces of mathematics. This inexpensive paperback edition will be a welcome addition to the libraries of students, mathematicians, and any math enthusiast.

Christmas Bells: A Novel

Description

"New York Times "bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini celebrates Christmas, past and present, with a wondrous novel inspired by the classic poem Christmas Bells, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I heard the bells on Christmas Day/ Their old familiar carols play/ And wild and sweet/ The words repeat/Of peace on earth, good-will to men! In 1860, the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow family celebrated Christmas at Craigie House, their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The publication of Longfellow s classic Revolutionary War poem, Paul Revere s Ride, was less than a month hence, and the country s grave political unrest weighed heavily on his mind. Yet with his beloved wife, Fanny, and their five adored children at his side, the delights of the season prevailed. In present-day Boston, a dedicated teacher in the Watertown public school system is stunned by somber holiday tidings.Sophia smusic program has been sacrificed to budget cuts, and she worries not only about herimpending unemployment but also about the consequences to her underprivileged students. At the church where she volunteers as music director, Sophia tries to forget her cares as she leads the children s choir in rehearsal for a Christmas Eve concert. Inspired to honor a local artist, Sophia has chosen a carol set to a poem by Longfellow, moved by the glorious words he penned one Christmas Day long ago, even as he suffered great loss. "Christmas Bells"chronicles the events of 1863, when the peace and contentment ofLongfellow sfamily circle was suddenly, tragically broken, cutting even deeper than the privations of wartime. Through the pain of profound loss and hardship, Longfellow s patriotism never failed, nor did the power of his language. Christmas Bells, the poem he wrote that holiday, lives on, spoken as verse and sung as a hymn. Jennifer Chiaverini s resonant and heartfelt novel for the season reminds us why we must continue to hear glad tidings, even as we are tested by strife. Reading"Christmas Bells"evokes the resplendent joy of a chorus of voices raised in reverent song."

This is a Moose

Description

Light! Camera! Moose! Moose? Yes, moose! When a movie director tries to capture the life of a moose on film, he's in for a big surprise. It turns out the moose has a dream bigger than just being a moose - and his friends are going to make that dream come true. In this hilarious romp, Richard T. Morris and bestselling illlustrator Tom Lichtenheld remind us to dream big and, when we do, to aim for the moon.

In "Wisdom of the Plant Devas," Thea Summer Deer reveals a new dimension of herbal medicine, one where the plant's spirit is consulted for guidance and healing beyond the physical. Examining the botany, modern and traditional uses, history, and folklore of 13 special herbs, such as rosemary, uva ursi, and datura, she shares divinations and messages from their devas, or plant spirits, explaining how these stories carry the herbs into our lives, letting them work their magic on us. Exploring herbal medicine from an energetic perspective, she reveals that by communing with the deva of a plant, we can call on the plant's physical, psychological, and spiritual medicine and guidance--without ingesting it or even being in its presence. My aim in this book is This is a Moose free ebook to help you to enjoy cooking, to minimize stress levels, to show how simple meals are possible and to inspire you to cook from fresh ingredients. Sometimes, we can get into the rut of cooking the same things over and over, or reaching for the ready-made meals. This book is full of fresh, new ideas, all of which are easily attainable. For those of you with younger children, there are some tips on getting them to eat and not getting stressed when they don't! Also simple snacks for kids and kids' parties. There are recipes designed to encourage your children into the kitchen and for when the funds are low. All are designed with busy lives in mind.

Abbas Kazerooni: On Two Feet and Wings

On Two Feet and Wings

Description

This amazing true story of a boy fleeing Tehran on his own during the Iran- Iraq War provides a powerful child's-eye view of political tumult, separation, survival, dreams and triumphs in a moving memoir that chronicles extraordinary times in an ordinary boy's life. I was not aware that I was crying until I saw the tears hit my shoes. Even with all the lights at the airport, the night outside looked dark and the air seemed thick. I wiped my eyes and tried to figure out what I could do. I was alone in a foreign land at the age of nine, and I did not speak the language. I was, quite simply, terrified...Close to his tenth birthday, Abbas has to leave his parents and friends to escape Tehran. The Iran-Iraq War is at its bloodiest. The ayatollahs, the rulers of Iran, have reduced the age of recruitment into the army. If Abbas doesn't leave soon, he will have to go to war. In the strange and often frightening city of Istanbul, Abbas has to grow up fast. Living alone for twelve weeks in a rundown hotel, he has to learn to live by his wits, and watch his back. Will he ever get his dream visa to England? This page-turning story about the courage of one small boy, based on true events, is as gripping as any novel. 'This is - all at once - history, Iran, Tehran and the view from the boyhood bedroom, the ancient formula of happiness when all else is past...Kazerooni's prose is elegant and his narrative tightly woven...It is a story that is deeply moving, its piquancy enhanced by the sombre thought that all the episodes of survival against such odds are based on the truth.' Telegraph, Calcutta, India. Ages: 11 to 14

The second part takes up the bottle gourd, which have been used for thousands of years. Even today this gourd is almost indispensable in many parts of the tropics, where species are used to make containers, musical instruments, and clothing, as food and medicine, and in art. The book concludes with a discussion of the gourd in folklore and myth and an appendix on growing, hybridizing, and preserving gourds for decoration. The product of years of research, travel, and countless conversations, "Burning Britain" is the true story of the UK punk scene from 1980 to 1984 told for the first time by the bands and labels that created it. Covering the country region by region, author Ian Glasper profiles On Two Feet and Wings pdf legendary bands like Vice Squad, Angelic Upstarts, Blitz, Anti-Nowhere League, Cockney Rejects, and the UK Subs as well as more obscure groups like Xtract, The Skroteez, and Soldier Dolls through hundreds of new interviews and photographs. As the 1970s closed the media was quick to declare punk dead, but a new generation of even more aggressive and political bands were announcing their presence through some of the most primal and potent music ever committed to plastic. This book is the definitive guide to that previously overlooked era.

Cast in Peril

Description

It has been a busy few weeks for Private Kaylin Neya. In between angling for a promotion, sharing her room with the last living female Dragon and dealing with more refugees than anyone knew what to do with, the unusual egg she'd been given began to hatch. Actually, that turned out to be lucky, because it absorbed the energy from the bomb that went off in her quarters. So now might be the perfect time to leave Elantra and journey to the West March with the Barrani. If not for the disappearances of citizens in the fief of Tiamarisdisappearances traced to the very Barrani Kaylin is about to be traveling with "

After surviving the return of Labrazio, Goon wants nothing more than to Cast in Peril free pdf settle onto a barstool with some whiskey, but a succession of cake-mad hobo gods, snake-hurling hillbillies, and bodacious burlesque dancers have other ideas. Osprey's study of desert tactics employed in North Africa during World War II (1939-1945). In 1940-43 North Africa saw the first major desert campaign by modern mechanized armies. The British, Italians, German Afrika Korps and US Army all addressed and learned from the special problems - human, logistical, mechanical and tactical - of the desert environment, most significantly a terrain empty of resources and offering little chance of concealment. Paddy Griffith traces the fast-learning development of armor, artillery and infantry tactics in this exceptional situation and illustrates it using references to the major engagements in the North African theater, which involved some of the greatest tacticians of World War II in one of the pivotal arenas.

Jeb Kinnison: Avoidant: How to Love (or Leave) a Dismissive Partner

Avoidant: How to Love (or Leave) a Dismissive Partner

Description

Jeb Kinnison's previous book on finding a good partner by understanding attachment types ("Bad Boyfriends: Using Attachment Theory to Avoid Mr. (or Ms.) Wrong and Make You a Better Partner") brought lots of readers to JebKinnison.com, where the most asked-about topic was how to deal with avoidant lovers and spouses. There are many readers in troubled marriages now who are looking for help, as well as people already invested in a relationship short of marriage who'd like help deciding if they should stick with it. People in relationships with Avoidants struggle with their lack of responsiveness and inability to tolerate real intimacy. Relationships between an Avoidant and a partner of another attachment type are the largest group of unhappy relationships, and people who love their partners and who may have started families and had children with an Avoidant will work very hard to try to make their relationships work better, out of love for their partner and children as well as their own happiness. The Avoidants in these relationships are more than likely unhappy with the situation as well-retreating into their shells and feeling harassed for being asked to respond with positive feeling when they have little to give. The other reason why so many people are looking for help on this topic is that it is an almost impossible problem. Couples counsellors rarely have the time or knowledge to work with an Avoidant and will often advise the spouse to give up on a Dismissive, especially, whose lack of responsiveness looks like cruelty or contempt (and sometimes it is!) Yet there is some hope-though it may take years and require educating the Avoidant on the patterns of good couples communication, if both partners want to change their patterns toward more secure and satisfying models, it can be done. How can you tell if your partner is avoidant? Does your partner: Seem not to care how you feel? Frequently fail to respond to direct questions or text messages? Accuse you of being too needy or codependent? Talk of some past lover as ideal and compare you to them? Act coldly toward your children and the needy? Remind you that he or she would be fine without you? Withhold sex or affection as punishment? If that sounds familiar, then your partner is likely avoidant. At about 25% of the population, Avoidants have shorter, more troubled relationships, and tend to divorce more frequently and divorce again if remarried. What can be done? Individual therapy for the motivated Avoidant can move their default attachment style toward security, and to the extent that problems have been made worse by an overly clingy and demanding anxious-preoccupied partner, therapy can help there, as well. Partners who read and absorb the lessons of these books will have a head start on noticing and restraining themselves when they are slipping into an unsatisfying communications pattern, and an intellectual understanding of the bad patterns is a step toward unlearning them. Not all difficult Avoidants can be reformed; that depends on both partners, the depth of their problems, and their motivation and ability to change over time. But many troubled marriages and relationships can be greatly improved, and the people in them can learn to be happier, with even modest improvements in understanding how they can best communicate support for each other. For those reading who have not read Bad Boyfriends or are less familiar with attachment types, a beefed-up section on attachment theory and attachment types from "Bad Boyfriends" is included. Regular readers of JebKinnison.com will find edited versions of some relevant material previously posted there."
